Laxative Abuse Screening

A service is provided for the detection of laxative abuse.

The four most common "stimulant" type laxatives (bisacodyl, danthron, phenolphthalein and rhein) may be detected in urine.

Danthron Danthron.gif (2232 bytes)
Rhein Rhein.gif (2454 bytes)
Bisacodyl Bisacodyl.gif (2623 bytes)
Phenolphthalein Phenolphthalein.gif (2565 bytes)

A 30 mL urine specimen (sterile plastic container without preservative) is required. Faecal specimens should not be sent for analysis.

The sampling strategy is often an important factor in the detection or confident elimination of laxative abuse. Thus, it is worthwhile considering obtaining specimens on two or three consecutive days and submitting these for analysis as a batch.
